Gran World Famous (In NZ)

Dave's Gran makes it into The New Zealand Herald

18 October -- The New Zealand Government is considering making the driving test easier but placing restrictions on the distance that can be driven by drivers over 80 years of age. Our Gran still has a full license and doesn't fancy a distance restriction. That only partly explains how she wound up with her picture in the The New Zealand Herald (Wednesday October 13, 2004) when they did a story on the issue. Good on you Gran! Your now world famous (in New Zealand).

Children's Show Is Magic

Burge children perform at Hamilton Church social

18 October -- The Hamilton Church of Christ (Life and Advent) had a social evening on Saturday evening. Sam, with a little help from Dad, Rachel, and Noah, put on a magic show before an enraptured (well, at least mildly  amused crowd. It was good fellowship & a fun evening.

The Burge Family on the Web

David Overcomes His Technophobia to Design a Family Web Page

15 October 2004 -- Despite a total lack of ability with all things to do with computers I (David) have bitten the bullet, taken the plunge, done the deed and all that. The Burge family now has their own web page. Of course if your reading this already this hardly counts as news.

Sam Says Thanks A Bunch Mum

Sam Tells Local Paper Mum's The Best

15 October 2004 -- Our local paper runs a weekly column, "Thanks a Bunch". People write in to nominate some worthy person to receive a bouquet of flowers. Fifty words can hardly capture all that Mum does for this family but Sam wrote in to say why Mum's the best. Much to everyone's surprise a photographer turned up to give Mum a big bouquet of flowers and take her photo. A few days later Mum's picture appeared in the local rag.

"Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.'" (Prov. 31:28-29).

Child Labour Laws Irrelevant

Sam Gets His First Real Job

15 October -- A few weeks back Sam started his first job, delivering pamphlets. He delivers to 500+ houses. This means biking about six kilometers two to three times per week. Mum, Noah (and sometimes Rachel) go with him.  As well as good exercise, and a little extra money, the children are learning to work.

"A man can nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him who can eat or find enjoyment?" (Ecclesiastes 2:24, 25).

A Fish In The Family

Rachel Swims One Kilometer

15 October -- All the children enjoy their Friday morning swimming lessons, but Rachel seems to have taken to swimming like, well ..., like a fish to water. Last week Rachel swam 52 lengths of the pool, slightly over one kilometer. She would have kept going if Dad hadn't tapped her on the head and told her that that we needed to stop for lunch.

"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." (1Tim. 4:8)
