Designing A Cops911 Vest

Well I have a confession to make, this article is something of a plug for Cops911. Cops911.com tailor custom made vests for paintballers. These are pretty much the BEST paintball vests you can get. Note that I say paintball vest, not military vest. Military vests and paintball vests are apples and oranges.  They're made for different people, who have different load bearing requirments. While you can retrofit an actual military vest or harness for paintball, many people opt for a true paintball vest... mostly by the way Cops911 can build you a custom vest to your requirements. Here's a list some of the features found on Cops911 vests...
  • Pale RiderRadio pouch. Every devoted scenarioballer needs a radio pouch. The standard radio pouch is made from nylon and will usually fit a larger size of PRS radio.
  • Integrated sling. Integrated slings are plastic buckles (or D-rings) atop each shoulder, attached to which is an adjustable nylon strap, which affixes to your marker via a velcro strap, or plastic clip. The popular ways to use this, is either a 1 or 2 point style. 1 point where both straps affix to the rear of the marker, and 2 point where 1 strap affixes towards the front of the marker. (See the article on Slings for more info)
  • Sidestraps. Almost all Cops vests comes with adjustable sidestraps. These are nylon straps, usually 3 on each side, that link the front and back of the vest, and cover the torso under each arm. These can have mesh or nylon underneath based on your personal preference.
  • Beltkeepers. These are velcro/nylon loops at the bottom of the vest, allowing you to loop a belt through, to wear around your waist. Great if you need to affix additional pouches or a holster to your belt.
  • D-rings or Mask holder. These are attachable anywhere on your vest.  Usually in the upper region close to the radio pouch, affixing a D-ring of mask holder (nylon loop & plastic buckle) can be useful for holding gloves, mask, grenades etc.
  • Utility pouches. These can be made to virtually any dimension. They close via velcro or a zip, and can be useful for carrying stuff like grenades, squeegees, map, snacks, gun oil, rag, allen keys, goggle cleaner, water bottle etc.
  • Hydration bladder. Most Cops vests come with a large hydration sleeve along the rear of the vest.
  • Tank Pouch. Located on the back of the vest, either horizontal or vertical, most milsim players who wear a vest, also use a remote line.
  • POD pouches.  The cornerstone of the paintball vest, pod pouches are the main thing that seperate a paintball vest from a military vest. Military vests are designed to hold M16 or AK47 magazines, wheras pod pouches hold 100, or 140 round pods.
  • MOLLE system. (MOdular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment). A MOLLE system is a series of interlocking nylon loops that allow you to attach, and move around your various pouches. Useful for bushballers who like to customise thier gear for each game.
  • Nylon or Mesh base. Cops911 vests come in either nylon or mesh. Nylon is very strong, medium weight, but doesn't breath very well so can be hot to wear in summer. Mesh is less strong, lightweight, but well ventilated.
So, how should you go about designing a custom built vest? What utilities do you know you need? what do you think you'll need? Well, as someone who's designed 2 vests, and seen the many many Cops vests out there, here are some hints for you to take into consideration.
  • JimmyConsider how hot the temperature gets in your area, and how much body fat you carry on you. The fact is, nylon insulates heat well, wheras mesh breathes. Obviously season will change the temperature you're playing in, but remember also (if you opt for mesh) you can still insulate by wearing an additional layer underneath your bdu.
  • Do you like pods up front? or around the back? Most new or intermediate players have only ever had pods placed on thier lower back (In a paintball harness), or on a belt. The way to answer this question is to ask yourself three things.
    1. Do you hate reaching around behind you to get pods? and then fiddling to get the empty pods back in?
    2. Would you be happy lying prone, or crawling with pods affixed to your chest/abdomen?
    3. How militaristic do you want to look? (Army guys don't have horizontal pods on thier backs)
  • Do you have a radio? do you plan to get one? Get a radio pouch. Even if you don't ever use a radio, you can still use the pouch as a utility pouch for a grenade, or rag etc.
  • How much additional gear do you like to carry? or would like to carry? Think about goggle cleaner, squeegees, water bottle etc.
  • Do you like reloading? How empty does your hopper get before you reload? Think about this one carefully. Frankly I hate reloading, so my vest has 140 round pods. 'Why carry 100, when you carry 140?'.
  • Are you a sling user? If the answer is yes, GET the integrated sling system.
  • Do you run remote? If the answer is no, consider getting a tank pouch anyway, you can still carry a water bottle in it.
FINAL WORDS

Listen; there's no surefire way to get the perfect, most adaptable paintball vest. Chances are, once you get it, and start wearing it, you'll start to notice certain things that could be improved or changed. The idea behind this shameless plug of an article for Cops911... is to get you thinking ahead of time and what you want, and more importantly... what's going to be practical.
