2008 Update
5/4/08

Wow, long time no update. Well I guess there's kind've a lot to cover, so here it goes, 1 bit at a time...

URL:
The Domain name expired a few weeks ago. (Bushball.co.nz), if you've found your way here, then chances are you still found it through google's listing of the site's individual pages, which are on my ihug webspace. I will probably renew the URL when it comes back into the public domain after 90 days, or if somebody else snatches it, I'll use a new one like "bushballarchive.co.nz" or something.

CSPG Forum:
This is now long gone. It was run by "Red Cyborg". Who was a player we had at The Ultimate Game for a year or so before he got bored of paintball, sold his gear... and last I heard converted to airsoft. He ran that forum, because nobody else wanted to. I ran the "Garden City Paintball" and "Southern Paintball NZ" forums in 2004 and 2005, and after which I really couldn't be bothered anymore with all the idiots, lurkers and troublemakers that would turn up.

However, CSPG worked well because we had a socialist policy of "Introduce yourself, or be banned". The forum was for real players... not damn fucking armchair critics. It was also only accessible upon registering, thus guests could not view any of the content. If I had to do it again with yet another regional forum, I would do it the same.

Future of articles:

Honestly I dunno. I've certainly put a lot of time into writing them. But here's the problem... as a hobby journalist, you want to know that people are actually getting some value out of what you write, however small that value may be. Unfortunately, people are not socially conditioned to give feedback to journalists. Ie- when was the last time you took the time to commend a newspaper columnist for their work?

So you write these things and you basically don't hear from people. You might get 1 or 2 compliments, but considering the overall audience thew website reaches (look at the counter, bottom left), the feedback is way less than 1%.

I regularly correspond with Rob "Tyger" Rubin and he tends to feel the same way about most of the work he's done. He's a co-author of the book "The Complete Guide to Paintball" (Available on Amazon.com), and is most famous for his Web Dog Radio and Expert Village series of tip-clip instructional videos. In fact some people consider him a 'living legend' in paintball circles. Living legend or no, he's an old school player who writes freelance as a job, and often feels just as frustrated at the level of apathy amongst paintballers.

So yeah, I may still do a run of new articles for 2008. I do have quite a bit of equipment that needs reviewing. Tiberius 8, PPS Blazer, and soon the Proto Matrix Rail. Also might do some articles on pistol play.

Future of website:

What I said last year hasn't changed. When I make the time, the front page of this site is gonna be radically altered to a more static format. The rest of the site will be largely unchanged.

Regional news:

I have to admit I don't know what the hell is really going on around the country. I stopped moderating (and readingthe NZPB forum last july which did wonders for my sanity. Hence I'm not in touch with what's going on. I do know Herb will probably run another big game in the Roto-Tauranga region later in the year. Hopefully I'll make it this year with cheaper airfares available.

In Canterbury, the Top Gun field has had some improvements over the last 6 months, haven't seen it for myself, but I'm told there's a lot of cool new stuff there. At The Ultimate Game, a COMPRESSOR is finally available. Supposedly it fills to 4500psi, however I only got 3000psi fills last time I was there.

I also made some cool snazzy recruitment posters at The Ultimate Game too. This was right before Xmas 07. They lasted all of 3 weeks before 2 of the 3 made were torn down by somebody. Don't know who. However what I CAN say is that Steve, and most of the staff were there and approving of them when I put them up. Anyway such seems to be the story of my paintball life, you try to do something good and make a difference and some sly bastard subverts your efforts.

Equipment features (International):

  • Apex ready bigshot barrels are now available from Lapco. 12 inch, available in different threads, apyder, tippmann etc.
  • PPS now making custom brass barrels. Any length, porting or solid, brass or powdercoat.
  • Tippmann Alpha Black now available, tactical edition for $130US
  • GForce PB now selling pneumatic grip frame for automags. Cockers, Spyders, Tippmanns coming soon (Or so they say)
  • UMS now selling Race Gun Compensator for Tiberius 8
  • Proto Matrix Rail now available in "Camo"

The Bushball Archive

1/12/07

Well it's been a good run over 3 years, but I've decided that in 2008, this website will shift format slightly. The site is going to become "The Bushball Archive" rather than simply being known by it's url, bushball.co.nz. This format change won't affect the website very much, it'll still be the informational database it always has been, and virtually all of it's static content will be the same. Basically, the front page will become less news oriented and more "feature & useful information" oriented... and II'll most likely change the Battalion section into a list of regional clubs.

The rest of the site will stay the same. Field ops will still be able to email me to get their contact details changed for the field list page, suppliers can get listed, and so on and so forth.

So why change?... well it's a long long story, and I could blog on about it for ages. But to put it simply... I don't have anything left to give to the NZ paintball community. I'm kinda burned out.

See, I've been giving an aweful lot for awefully long (2003) and I don't get much in return. Mostly I've been giving my personal time and effort. This goes into word of mouth recruiting, doing field work for free locally, and journalism.... writing articles and maintaining this website. I even moderated the NZPB forum for about 2 years before the children on there finally led me to realise that they're not worthy of my time.

So that's the jist of it. I may or may not keep the domain name. It expires in april. Mabey I'll renew it if I can get it cheaper somewhere else, I currently use DomaiNZ. If I don't... then I'll probably find some free webspace to put it onto. If you have any reccomendations, feel free to email me.

2 more off topic notes;-
  • Rapid Fire Paintball (Timaru) has had it's phone number updated
  • Some of you have had trouble registering on the CSPG forum. If you have, don't worry about it, the forum is really only used for coordination of attendance. Just start showing up at TUG sundays from 12pm onwards and you'll meet the regulars. Honestly we would rather see you attend (regularly!!!!!!) than register on the forum.

Dunedin & Wellington Big Games 2007
24/8/07

B2 has a Dunedin big game come Labour weekend, info here.
Another big game in Wellington come November, info here.

Also got a new blog online, "Great Expectations", which is all about the dumb reasons people show up at a paintball field. The Strategy TAG entry in the Field List has also been updated.

Also created a forum Guestbook. You'll see links to the side and bottom of this page. Please feel free to give some feedback.

And this week's blacklist goes to AFMO.COM! Do not order from here! I tried, they declined my order(s), and charged my card anyway. I'm now in the process of trying to get my money back. Do NOT order!!!!
