He worked as a Miner in St Austell where soon after the 1851 census, he married Elizabeth Gerry, also born in St Austell 1830. John and Elizabeth had their first 2 children Elizabeth, 1852 and John, 1854 in St Austell, but by the time Melinda, their 3rd child was born in 1856, the family had relocated to Linkinhorne. Mary Jane was their next child born in 1858 following which, the quickly expanding family made their final move to Pensilva where John and Elizabeth had 7 more children. William Henry 1860, Selena 1861, James 1863, Thomas 1865, Edward 1868, Elizabeth Anne 1870 and Emma 1873. In the 1861 census John was recorded as a Copper Miner and the family's home was at Middlehill near Pensilva. Elizabeth, their first child must have died sometime in the 1860's because she doesn't appear in the 1871 census but a new 1 year old daughter, Elizabeth Ann does. In the 1871 and 1881 census', John and Elizabeth with their 10 children had moved into Pensilva and by 1891 were living at the Cross in Pensilva. St. Ive John & Emma John Tregilgas began life in 1854 in St Austell but grew up in Pensilva, St Ive, after his parents John and Elizabeth relocated the family in 1859 when young John was 5. Many families were flocking into the expanding mining region at the time. John, like his dad, became a Miner and was working in the mines by the age of 17. He also played the Euphonium and became a member of the local Brass Band. Somewhere along the line John met Emma Smith Brooks who also grew up in Pensilva. Her parents, John Brooks (previously school master in St Teath) and Mary Smith, had moved their family from St Teath prior to 1861 during the great mining boom. Emma was born in Callington in 1852. She was listed as a Mine Worker in the 1871 census when she was 19. John and Emma were married in Liskeard on the 6th of May 1875. Over the next few years they had a hand full of sons: John, James Henry, Wilfred Thomas, Eustace, and Herbert Stanely. Wilfred Thomas died young in 1883. In the 1881 census John is listed as a Copper Miner but also an Invalid. We don't know what the story was there but we do know that a few years later in about February of 1887, John was badly injured in a Tin mine explosion which left him partially paralized. He died about 14 months later on April 28 1888 in Pensilva, St Ive, where he was buried in the churchyard without a gravestone. Following Johns death, with only a shilling to her name, Emma left Cornwall and went to Burnley with her 4 boys and 6 months pregnant with her next child Two of her sisters, Susan and Mary Elizabeth had previously moved to Burnley with their husbands who had found work in the coal mines. It was May 1888 when Emma, now aged 39, and her 5 boys shifted into a house that backed onto the home of her sister Mary Elizabeth, who was married to William Pearce. William was born in St Ives in 1847. In June of 1888, Emma's sister Mary Elizabeth, gave birth to Caroline Pearce. A month later in July, Emma gave birth to Wilfred George. Two years later in 1890, William and Mary Elizabeth had another daughter, Emma Pearce and in 1892 Mary Elizabeth died giving birth to a son, James Pearce. Now, William Pearce aged 45 and Emma Tregilgas 43 had both lost their spouses and found themselves living together at 16 Pembroke Street Burnley. One year later Emma found herself to be pregnant to William, the husband of her late sister. To avoid controversy their son was named William Tregilgas hoping to obscure the fact that he was the son of William Pearce but 2 years later in 1895, Emma and William Pearce were married anyway, in the nearby village of Worsthorne. William Tregilgas moved to Woking, Surrey, where for some reason the 2nd 'g' of Tregilgas was dropped and he became known as William Tregellis. Emma died in Burnley on 6th September 1916 aged 64. William Pearce died on 17th October 1917 aged 70. Descendants Of John & Emma more details ![]() |
